• (2 points) There are more accurate ways to calculate things, but trying to estimate investment growth several decades into the future is not an exact science because you don't KNOW what the returns are going to be. All you can do is make some assumptions about what your average annual return will be. That average annual return will include capital growth, dividends, and interest. Don't get distracted analyzing XEQT, you can use high level assumptions. Use that Tangerine calculator from my first comment and compare it to any other complex calculator you want, I guarantee if you're using the same variables you'll come up with very similar numbers. You could make your own future value calculator in Excel in couple of minutes. Whether OP is investing in ETFs or GICs it doesn't change the calculation, the only difference would be the rate of return variable. I don't know how to prove your math wrong because I don't understand what you're trying to calculate. Like I said, you're WAY overthinking this. Refer to that future value link, you could do the calculation for OP if you want. OP told us how much the are going to invest, we know how many time periods (months) it is, all you need to make an assumption about is the rate of return.....which as I said, for stocks you could use anywhere from 5% to 10% and you could do a worst/best case scenario comparison. That Tangerine calculator is just a future value calculator with an easy to use interface. If you don't use a future value calculation, how else are you going to calculate OP's future investment balance?
