AQN and RNW are down 47% and 38% respectively over one year with a large portion of both those decreases happening within the last few weeks for both of them. It’s pretty clear that initial interest ... Read More
- (21 points) I haven't studied RNW, but AQN's dividend is safe, especially now that Kentucky acquisition has been blocked (it may still go through, who knows!). If they cut it, that gives them the opportunity to invest more in the business. But they don't have to. Either way... it's a good time to buy these. Either you will get 10% dividend and see little to no share price appreciation, or they will cut the dividend, and share price will rally right away.
- (14 points, 2 replies) Really don't agree on this one. Seen it too many times that a Div cut leads to price stability and equity gains (from the current bottom) as uncertainty is diminished. See Ala Gas and Rio Can as a proper example. What is needed now for AQN is some certainty going forward. Their answers on the CC were brutal (aka. just trust us bro, we'll let you know on investor day, but until then you can wait it out).
- (12 points) Agreed. AQN currently pays out about 65% of FFO, which is manageable. Calculating payout ratio using EPS for infrastructure intensive businesses like utilities doesn't paint the full picture. For example, Enbridge has a payout ratio of over 100% when calculated using earnings, and no one is worried about a dividend cut there. A dividend cut could happen for AQN, but it's far from certain, especially if the Kentucky deal falls through.
- (7 points) Believe it or not, I already started averaging down in AQN despite that high price point haha.
- (6 points) I think so. I just bought some rnw and AQN on Friday. Though I have been averaging down on AQN for about 2 years now :(
- (5 points) I don’t believe the earth is falling, more so looking for additional insight. I clearly have belief still as I’ve DCA into AQN and soon RNW.
- (3 points) IMO, you really have to trust management here and I don’t. There are a lot better div stocks to grab if you’re a straight divvy investor. And there are a lot better renewable companies to invest in if you’re looking for that exposure. That’s why I think AQN is getting flushed out right now. The risk reward is not there yet for me. I’ll wait another year to see if their debt is being managed properly as rates keep rising.
- (2 points) AQN insiders loaded on drop which is a good sign, around 3 million $ worth of shares
- (2 points) I made bank on that blip last week in AQN, it is a good stock to trade but not to hold purposely.
